Video Editing Software

Video editing software has a very important role to play in the video sequences editing and is considered to be the application software. To simplify the process, your video will be saved as a JPEG image file and stored in a specified directory.

This software can show one image displayed on screen and also the specified directory.  One can zoom out and be able to take care of many more files of the directory. This will make just one file cover only one pixel line in an editor, which makes it ideal for the rough cutting.  To play the video the play button will allow the software to automatically advance from one image to another.  This video editing software is also capable of rotating the JPEG images 90 degrees or even mirrored.  It also allows for multiple files to be selected all at once.  This is where the video editing software resembles a slide show editing software. A slide show editing software has a lot of decoders for the image file format, while the video editing software has a lot video codecs. It also offers editing of the sound or audio clips which are a part of the video and is able to synchronize the video with the audio.

This specialized editing software has the ability which could be the most important for a professional video editor – the special effects and transitions.  In some cases it can do the video encoding so that a Web video, a DVD, a video pod cast or a mobile phone video could be created.

Some of the pioneers in this kind of software are still the most popular on the market – Sony Vegas Pro, Avid, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere. These kinds of software have had a huge influence in editing TV programs, films and are a great tool for any professional video editor.

There are some other programs that are in the same category, like: iMovie , Microsoft’s Windows Movie Maker, NERO 8 Ultra, Pinnacle Systems’ MediaSuite, GEAR Video, autoProducer and muveeNow.  A very popular free (open source) video editor with terrific features is Virtual Dub. One thing that separates this software from any other higher priced editing program is the drag & drop timeline interface, which it doesn’t have.
Here are some suggestions on choosing video editing software to meet your needs and budget:

  •     You will need to plan out a budget.  The video editing software available can be free or commercial quality. Professionals will choose the commercial software for obvious reasons.  You can use the free software for home videos.
  •     Choose software that can open and save in the video format that you want to encode in.
  •     Decide if the interface is important to you and would you like it to be simple.
  •     Are you looking for a HD – high definition video supported software?
  •     Take a good look at your computer and make sure that it will meet the specifications required in the hardware. It is also very important that the software is supported by the operating system that you run on your computer.
  • Now you will have to choose software and here are some video editing software, what they can provide and how they are rated.

Video Editing Software in the Current MarketPlace

  • Windows Movie Maker. This software is not rated very high as it has too many limitations and it can freeze due to quite a few factors.
  • AviDemux. First of all it is free. Second, it is a video editor that was designed to do simple filtering, cutting and encoding tasks.  The operating systems it works on are Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS-X and BSD.
  • Pinnacle Studio made by Avid.  It is very easy in the beginning and it will also allow you to grow into it. It functions perfect with Sony HDD camcorders as it is one of a few programs that can drag and drop AVCHD files and begin editing straight away.  This software works well with a standard def. When it comes to the hi def, it can take your PC to its very limits.  A downside to this software is in the capacity it requires from your hard drive, since it can use a great deal of the space with the rendered files.  The price for basic software is around $50, while software with the HD capability will be around $100 and the top of the line with all of the extras will cost about $130.
  • Sony Vegas. This software is a very good editing program with a good editing structure.  Price will run approximately to $550.
  • Adobe Premiere. There are many versions of this software and overall all are very good.  It has a lot of audio-overlaying options and will offer its user a very good video transition. There are some limits to the text animations.  Price is about $799.
  • Apple Final Cut Studio. This editing program will only run on Mac OS systems but is a very reliable software program. Presents the video in a professional looking form and offers a lot of advantages.  There is just one drawback – the price, which is about $1200. Apple Final Cut Express is a cheaper option of this program.

Whatever your choice will be when it comes to video editing software, make sure it matches your needs and expectations.
